Ethical Charter for Independent Research and Publishing
Institutional responsibility / Reading the charter
Three connected responsibilities help readers navigate the charter. The full principles remain below.
Distinguish evidence, interpretation, inference and judgment. Acknowledge uncertainty and contrary material.

Museum of One is an independent research institute, archive, and scholarly publisher. Its independence places a particular responsibility on the work it produces: sources must be visible, claims must be accountable, editorial decisions must be explainable, and the record must remain open to correction.
The Museum does not treat institutional affiliation as a substitute for evidence, nor independence as an exemption from scholarly standards. Research published here should be capable of standing on its own record.
This charter sets out the principles governing research, criticism, publication, editorial work, and archival activity undertaken by Museum of One.
Museum of One exists to support research and criticism that can be pursued seriously outside conventional institutional structures.
Its purpose is not to reproduce the authority of a university, museum, or academic department on a smaller scale. It is to maintain a place in which scholarship can be developed, published, questioned, preserved, and revised without requiring institutional affiliation as a condition of legitimacy.
The standard remains the work itself: the quality of its reasoning, the adequacy of its evidence, and the care with which it enters the public record.
Museum of One was founded in part from a concern with what criticism does to the things it encounters. For that reason, interpretive responsibility forms part of its research ethics.
Restraint does not require the suspension of judgment. It requires attention to the point at which judgment exceeds what can responsibly be claimed.
Museum of One may publish disagreement. Agreement is not a condition of serious exchange.
Open access is most useful when a work can also be found, cited, preserved, and distinguished from other versions of the same record.
Research depends upon other people, including those whose contribution may fall outside conventional authorship.
Translators, editors, correspondents, photographers, researchers, collaborators, and others whose work materially contributes to a publication should be acknowledged in a form appropriate to their contribution.
Museum of One does not treat citation as decoration. Attribution is part of the intellectual record.
No publication becomes infallible by being published.
Where an error affects a factual claim, attribution, source, translation, or substantive argument, the correction should be made clearly enough that a later reader can understand what changed.
Revision is not treated as evidence that scholarship has failed. A record that can be corrected is more reliable than one that protects the appearance of certainty.
Museum of One accepts responsibility for the material it places into the scholarly and public record.
That responsibility includes maintaining accurate metadata, distinguishing documentation from interpretation, preserving provenance, acknowledging contributors, correcting errors, and making its editorial principles available for scrutiny.
Because the Museum works independently, it cannot rely upon affiliation to establish the authority of what it publishes. Each work must carry its own evidence.
That is the standard this charter establishes.
Operational scope for the public catalogue and collection guides. Adopted 2 November 2026. The principles of this charter continue to apply.
The catalogue describes Museum of One’s published research, publication records, appropriately permissioned public dialogues, methods documentation and relevant external references. Tarique, publishing as Dorian Vale, maintains the record for Museum of One. A link to an external source records a reference; it does not establish ownership, custody, affiliation or endorsement.
Material is included for its documented relevance to the research programmes. Before a new deposit or contributed document is published, its creator, source, format, version, permission and access terms must be recorded. Inclusion is a curatorial decision and does not certify an argument or independent peer review. No open submission or automatic acceptance service is implied.
Only material cleared for public access belongs in the public catalogue, downloads or search index. Private drafts, personal information and restricted correspondence remain excluded. Permission to quote selected passages does not authorise publication of an entire exchange. Reuse follows the notice on the exact item or edition, including separate third-party rights.
Readers may report a problem to research@museumofone.art, identifying the record and supporting evidence. Metadata corrections should preserve genuine publication dates, identifiers and version history. Substantive changes to a published work should be identified as a correction or new edition rather than silently replacing an original. Privacy or rights concerns are reviewed for proportionate access restriction; a public correction note must not reveal protected information. External repositories and catalogues retain control of their records.
Selected public files have verified repository copies and recorded checksums. The checked corpus and limitations are documented in the maintenance record. The public catalogue is a description and access service, not a guarantee of permanent storage. Recovery of the previous catalogue and an independent recovery copy remain outstanding. Original files, metadata provenance and existing URLs are retained while recovery is pursued.
Collection guides identify their coverage, arrangement, sources, restrictions and gaps. They should be reviewed when their underlying records materially change. A named successor, account recovery and renewal arrangements remain owner decisions; no successor or institutional partnership is implied.
