This article examines the work of Emirati artist Hassan Sharif, focusing on his handmade accumulations known as Objects. Set against the backdrop of the rapid modernization and industrial spectacle of the United Arab Emirates in the 1980s, Sharif’s practice is analyzed as a profound exercise in "ethical repetition" and civic asceticism. By meticulously folding, binding, and assembling discarded everyday materials—such as rope, wire, newspaper, and cardboard—Sharif cultivated a "theology of the banal" that both mirrors and inverts the hierarchies of Western conceptual minimalism.
The paper argues that Sharif's deliberate manual exhaustion serves as a critique of hyper-consumption and an act of solidarity with the invisible physical labor that built the modern Gulf. Furthermore, the inherent fragility and inevitable decay of his perishable works are explored as deliberate challenges to museum conservation and the commodification of the global art market. Ultimately, the article posits that Sharif’s continuous, "skill-less" repetition transcends mere aesthetic endeavor to become a moral act of resistance, transforming mundane drudgery into a lasting meditation on presence, humanity, and conscience.
Dorian Vale is a chosen pseudonym, not to obscure identity, but to preserve clarity of voice and integrity of message. It creates distance between the writer and the work, allowing the philosophy to stand unclouded by biography. The name exists not to hide, but to honor the seriousness of the task: to speak without spectacle, and to build without needing to be seen.
