Abstract
This essay examines material deterioration in contemporary art as an ethical and aesthetic condition rather than a conservation problem. Challenging the museum’s traditional commitment to permanence, it argues that entropy, material fatigue, and physical decay can function as intrinsic components of artistic meaning rather than accidental losses requiring restoration. Drawing upon principles of Post-Interpretive Criticism, the essay proposes that deterioration constitutes evidence of an artwork’s temporal existence and should be approached through witnessing rather than interpretive recovery.
Through discussions of works by Eva Hesse, Gordon Matta-Clark, Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Dieter Roth, Anya Gallaccio, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, and Zoe Leonard, the essay explores how unstable materials—including latex, fat, organic matter, flowers, candy, and architectural interventions—redefine the relationship between object, institution, and viewer. It argues that museums often operate within a preservation paradigm that privileges permanence, stability, and market value, while overlooking the ethical significance of material transformation. Cases of conservation intervention further reveal the tension between institutional stewardship and artistic intentions that incorporate impermanence.
Rather than treating physical degradation as damage or failure, the essay frames material fatigue as a visible record of time, encounter, and existence. It proposes that criticism should abandon the pursuit of hidden meanings in favor of attentive witnessing, where cracks, fading pigments, decomposition, and structural instability become legitimate aesthetic events. In this framework, decay functions not as the negation of the artwork but as part of its continuing presence.
By repositioning entropy as an ethical condition of viewing, the essay contributes to contemporary debates in aesthetics, conservation ethics, museum studies, material culture, and conceptual art. It advances the view that the moral responsibility of both institutions and critics is not to deny mortality through preservation alone, but to recognize impermanence as an essential dimension of artistic experience.

Dorian Vale is a chosen pseudonym, not to obscure identity, but to preserve clarity of voice and integrity of message. It creates distance between the writer and the work, allowing the philosophy to stand unclouded by biography. The name exists not to hide, but to honor the seriousness of the task: to speak without spectacle, and to build without needing to be seen.
